Galvanic or high frequency-which is better for product penetration?

I am a new Esty and am not real sure which of these is better...My teacher never went over it except a brief description and I am a little confused. I am using the acne sparking gap after extractions, galvanic for desincrustation, and the spoon HF electrode to penetrate serums and such. I know not to use anything with alchohol in it, but really wish I had a better understanding of these. I would appreciate any thoughts or wisdom!! Thanks!!

Hi Amanda,

High Frequency would not be for product penetration, but Galvanic in the (+) would when used with a compatible serum under a water-based gel conductive medium.

If you have one near you, the International Dermal Institute does have an excellent class that will explain these two machines, and you get a take-home manual to reference after that.  When I took it, the cost was $100 and was a full-day.

What I prefer is ultrasonic penetration with the BT micro from Bio Therapeutic.  It is gentler than galvanic and has a great peel mode for exfoliation.  :)  Madeleine

Oh the skin scrubber thingy.  I have one of the corded models from Bellaire (Sing Hong, for those of you who know him).  While it is ok for product penetration, the method of delivery is different than Galvanic.  It is a great machine, and I am glad I have one!

Hi Amanda,

High Frequency is great for killing bacteria and creating heat in the skin which helps penetration, galvanic on the other hand is the most efficient cost effective way to penetrate water based serums and desincrust the skin. This is a shameless plug, but I wrote a book for milady on basic equipment because a lot of schools do not go into the details we need to know as estheticians. There are other modalities such as LLT ultrasound that work to penetrate products and I do use the ultrasonic tool but really only for exfoliation, I get better results with my galvanic.

You can contact me if you have any other questions, i would be happy to help you. I am so glad you want to learn, you will love this profession. Miladys Aesthetician Series: Guide to Equipment

Hello Susanne, I am having some difficulty with my equipment too. I'm a new Esty and I practice in a salon day spa. I bought a multifunction machine online from China. When I recieved the machine, I did not know how to use some of the features on the machine. I tried to refer to the manual but it was only 12 pages and was very difficult to underststand. I contacted the company that I bought it from and they are no longing selling this machine, they referred me to the maker. I emailed them and they sent me an email back in Chinese and they don't have a phone number. The company is a very reputable company (Radium) but I am not able to get any support from anyone.

I recently bought a very good dvd by Rita Page that shows me how to use facial machines but there are some features on mine that are not on any machine that I have seen yet. Please help! I can send you some info and pictures about the machine and maybe you can tell me what these features are and how to use the, I will get your book as a resource.                             Thank you, Kim

Hi Kim,

In order to help I need to know the following;

  • Features-steamer, brush, high frequency etc..
  • Picture- that would be great, you could post it here and all of us can take a look.
  • Manual-if you could scan what you have and email me I can do some research for you

Don't worry, we will get you some help! Your situation is very common and I think a lot of us have gone through this. Hang in there :)

I need to buy your book Susanne. xoxo!
@Susanne: Thank you so much!! I went to a school here in NM that used Salon Fundamentals, (not a great book in my opinion!) and had a teacher who never used anything other than a steamer and mag lamp in her 20 years as an Esty. She seemed to have no desire on educating herself or others on any of the equipment that we had right there in our room!! I had also went to school in Florida and at that institute we had Milady and I find myself referring to that book time and time again. I am so very excited and passionate about what I am doing and don't ever hope to be done learning!! I was a bit discouraged not having a true mentor or someone to turn to to help guide me, so you can imagine how elated I was to find this forum! I am definitley going to purchase this book, thank you so much for suggesting it, you have no idea how much I truly appreciate it. It's a little scary and overwhelming with so much incorrect info out there. My manual for my Dermisystem says that I have use my HF for product penetration. Your book is certainly going to help me dispell all the incorrect info! Thank you again, Susanne!!
Thanks Amanda, I will be happy to answer any of your questions! I just created a NW esthetician group but I would love it if you could join, we are going to start some really honest discussions as we go along. The only info that will be relevent to the NW is the legislative part. Keep in touch!

Looovvvveeee my BT Micro!  It uses both ultrasonic and micro current to penetrate!  It's the best!  Check out their website!

Galvanic has penetration properties but do not use an oil serum. High frequency doesnt have penetration properties it just will stimulate the blood circulation and create a little heat which can help and you can use an oil with high frquency. If you want some to penetrate deep use the galvanic.
