To Wax or Not to Wax....

Hi everyone!

I am starting to really consider dropping body waxing (save for underarms b/c I love that service) from my service menu. I am still fairly new starting up- and I'd really like my primary focus to be facial waxing/ facials/ body treatments/ and lash & eyebrow tinting.

I don't enjoy body waxing... I know a lot of people say that's their "bread and butter" but I haven't had anyone book any of those services yet... wondering if that's a sign!  I also have a VERY small esthetics studio inside a chiro's office, with carpeted floors, and even though I put down hard plastic floor covers in some areas, it's still a risk... and could get messy on there. I don't really like all that sticky wax! haha

Has anyone had success with NOT offering the body waxing services and focusing primarily on care of the skin and eyebrow esthetics??

Gina do you have a website? Having a website will make it easier to manage your pricing and change services when needed. If you don't have one you may really want to consider it, it can be a simple one.  I mostly hand out my business card and direct people to my website because it has the most updated information.  I would not worry about the cards you have already distributed. Its about getting your name out there. However, because you offer more than waxing people will more than likely call you for your other services. From my experience, for example I have a few clients that only come in for brow and facial waxing. Although I try to talk to them about facials and the importance of skin care they have no interest. So what I'm basically saying if someone calls you for body waxing that may be all they are interested in. You could simply say I no longer offer that service. Yes, who knows they could have been a potential client for other services offer for them to visit your website and join your email list. Sorry this is long, but I hope it helps and not confusing.

Hi Theresa- not long, I appreciate the thoughtful responses!

Yes, I do have a website. I made up the menu cards so I could have them sitting out in the chiro's office where I'm situated- so when her clients came in they could see my services/pricing/etc. to hopefully draw some in. It's not working.... so I need to be more creative with my marketing out there.

I also put some in the hair salon next door (they do hair & nails)... but I plan to come up with a better display for over there.

I think I may just pull the menu cards- especially if I change up my skin care line and offer different facials....

of course- I also have a BIG sign that I got for one of the front windows that says "WAXING" as one of my services.... but that's true- I will offer LIMITED waxing..... :-P

I enjoyed this thread and also find a spot inside a chiro.'s office interesting!  I have worked 4 places with 4 different skin care lines and have NEVER enjoyed body waxings except men's backs.  I recently quit a job at a Doctor's office and have set up what I hope will be a successful but small practice in my home with NO body waxings except "bikini" waxing and underarms.  Gina, I am curious what skin care line has tempted you to change?  I haven't quite settled on a particular line but do know that I will go with a company that doesn't have a minimum order.  Presently I use products from Skin Scripts and I do like them.

Hi Victoria- best of luck to you in your new venture!! How nice to be able to set up in your home- no rent!! I would love that.
I am switching to Image Skincare. I have Skin Scripts as well, but I am so limited to what I can use in Ohio b/c of pH, whereas Image is more versatile for me. I am very impressed with the line overall, and the support is awesome. They also have no minimum orders.

I love waxing personally. If you get in tune with the skill, you can do it quickly and efficently and make good money. It is a great add on service to facials or if someone comes in for waxing its a great opportunity to offer your other services. Clients that get body waxing are good canidates for body treatments. They obviously aren't shy and need the exfoliation or some comes and gets a scrub or wrap you can offer them your waxing services. Overall I would say keep the waxing services.

I just took it off my menu as well.  I kept all waxing that can be done with hard wax, face, underarm, bikini.  I am not really a fan of waxing, esp since I have been lasered myself.  I think waxing should stick with the people that do have it as their bread and butter.  I met an Esty that lives about 20 min north of me and if someone calls about waxing, I will refer to her because she has been mainl waxing for a long time and I feel she is more the expert.  It's just not my passion so I want to focus more on what is, facials and such, and not be sitting worried that someone is going to call for a leg wax or back and I am freaking out.

I'd say if you really don't feel comfortable with the service, or just hate doing it, don't do it. Practice makes perfect though. I use to dread Brazilian Waxing when I first started, but now it's my #1 service and I'm so glad I stuck with it!
