Please answer this question for our "Your Turn" page in the next issue of ASCP Skin Deep magazine! What are three things that help you get through those times in your practice when things just feel a little more difficult or challenging? We asked the same question of our massage & bodywork therapist members and the answers were fascinating ... everything from prayer to piano playing to mozzarella cheese sticks. :)

I have a super cute picture of my dog on my computer screen saver. Whenever I'm feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, I go to my computer and look at her picture. It makes me laugh and suddenly things don't feel so overwhelming.

I truly believe that what you think and talk about is what you get. Just knowing this keeps me focused on the positive. Whenever the negative sneaks in, I stop and remember that if I keep focusing on that negative, I'll only get more negative.

Gratitude. Even when I'm challenged, I do my best to feel gratitude for the good things. I'm not saying that it is always easy but it does help you feel better!

I love it! All very true...especially how much pets can help. Being around those little friends always lifts the spirits.

I take a deep breath and recite my mantra to myself, "Life is fun..if it's not, then I'm doing it wrong."  After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 (10yrs ago!) I made a lot of changes in my life,  including my work life. I have simplified my life at work however,  there still comes some hiccups every now again. When that happens I take a moment and look at my favorite picture of my Dad (who recently passed a little over a year ago) and remember all the supportive words and encouragement he gave me along with a few jokes he told me over our life together and I just smile. Nothing can rattle me after a moment with dad!

That is such a sweet way to remember your dad. I bet he would be so proud to know that he is still helping you.

When things feel like they're a little more difficult or challenging, I take a step back and look at everything in the big scheme of things (whatever that means). It's like looking at a river that's rushing in front of me - it's going fast and hard but I have to cross it so I take the leap. If the river carries me away, then I go with the flow. If I make it across, I'm good to go - to continue with my plan for that day (or week, or month). I take the practical, tactical approach. If all else fails, I pray... and make sure to sleep on it. There's got to be a plan B, C, and D. Otherwise, I'm happy to have gone through these challenges. It's what makes us resilient - we've got to be grateful for the little pearls of knowledge we get from these difficult experiences.

1. Appropriate verses from the Book of Psalms help give me strength. Psalm 37 has one of my favorite verses: "Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and nurture faith."

2. Pictures of my grandchildren remind me how fortunate I am. I do have a life outside of my job.

3. If I get a bad energy client or a few of them, I reflect on all the good energy clients, and remind myself that I'm doing a good job. It isn't my fault if some people bring in negativity. Some people are going to complain no matter how hard you try to please them, and it helps me to remember that I did what I could for them. Don't give unkind people the power to bring you down!

I think about my husband and my dogs, and remind myself that I get to go home to them at the end of the day! Looking forward to seeing them makes me want to power through even the toughest day.
