I am a 45 year old single lady ready to sign up at Christine Valmy to become a licensed Aestitican. I would like to go part-time and remain part-time at my current job. However, I haven't yet discussed with HR. More scared about being able to support myself after I graduate. Any thoughts?

First of all, congratulations on your decision! Change is a huge thing and knowing you are ready is such a gift :) I am unfamiliar with the school you mentioned but I am sure you have researched it and that is is a good fit for you! Secondly, does the school offer part time education? That might be a way to lessen the financial worry right now. Also that way, you may not even have to bring HR into it. And lastly, when you do get your degree and license you could work part time as an esty and possibly go part time at your current job and ease into the esty field fulltime...once you get regulars and find yourself being in demand you might find then that you can indeed support yourself as a full time esty :)

Best of luck Nina and please keep us posted!!!

Sincerely,

annie

Thanks Annie. Great advice.

Nina I sent you a friend request.

Hello Nina. I just wanted to say that I am 51 and becoming an Esty is the best decision I have ever made.  I want to open my own business, small but my own. I am not sure when that will happen. I do know that it is a leap of faith and desire. No one can tell the future, but for me, I will never know until I get out there and do it. The first step is the classes and getting licensed. Who knows what direction you will take after getting your license. There is so many different directions that Esthetics can take you. You will discover that in classes. If you can go part-time and work part-time until you finish school, that is a good plan for now. As far as the future after school, too many directions for you to choose from like working for a Dermatologist, a Plastic Surgeon, becoming a Makeup Artist, a Sales Rep for products or equipment, working in a Spa, or working for yourself.   I love Esthetics. When I gave my first facial, while my client was relaxing, it completely energized me!!! It still does. You will find your own Esthetic Path.  I wish you lots of luck and please keep us all posted on your progress!!

Diane, thank you so much for your reply. You've totally inspired me! Tomorrow I have an appt with my HR person to discuss the part-time work idea. Cross  your fingers for me. When I visited the Christine Valmy school in NYC I knew right away that becoming a licensed Esthitician was what I want to do. I have always been held back by fear and  have taken administrative jobs that are terribly boring and monotonous. I cannot sit in front of computer 40 hours a week anymore. I will definitely keep you posted. And thank you again, what you wrote was exactly what I needed to hear.

If you feel passionate about it, go for it.  You will be successful but it will take some time.  I am going into my 2nd year of having my own thing and still am not busy to where I can take a paycheck but I have a great supporting boyfriend that is my cheerleader :).  There are times you will want to give up but I will tell you this is THE MOST rewarding career and I love it and you will too.  Good luck and please keep us posted.  This is a great forum to be a part of and their insurance is the best for when the time comes.

Thanks Shelia. There's a saying "do what you love and money comes later."

Another question for you, is your personal health care insurance affordable?

Hi Nina

I was 45 when I entered the field and now I'm enjoying my 4th year as a sole practitioner.  Girl, go for it! If you're passionate about it and find your niche you can do amazing things!  My advice would be to find a part time job   in the skin care industry.  Doing so will keep you connected, motivated and hopefully excited about skin care.

Take care!

Good Luck Miss Nina! You can do it! Just follow your dreams. There will be up's and downs but you will find your way and we will all be here to support you!

xoxo

Thanks again Tiffany.

Follow your dreams. I left my corporate job to pursue skin care. It's been 3 years and I couldn't have been happier. My life has been changed for the better. If you love it, do it...

I enjoyed reading this discussion, as I am a 57 yr old that is embarking on a home-based career as well.  I have worked in med-spas for years and am ready to do things my way, on my own schedule.  I am passionate about skin care, but a little nervous about starting my own business.  So glad I found this site!  I would like to know what the best-sellers are for other etsys in terms of treatments and products, and what makeup lines are preferred.  Any thoughts?
