Hello, I am very new at this and hoping I can get some help from someone. I recently performed a treatment on my client, a basic facial using organic product. She then broke out a couple days later. I thought that organic is safe but frankly its not. I could be doing something wrong? Has anyone experienced this before? Your help is much appreciated.

Thinking that organic = safe is definitely not recommended.  Organic can mean a lot of things, one of which is... absolutely nothing!  Anything can be labeled organic, acne-safe, non comedogenic, etc etc and it doesn't have to actually be so.

Secondly, anyone can break out after a facial under certain circumstances.  For instance, if the client hadn't had a facial or exfoliation in a very long time and had a lot of 'undergrounders' as I like to call them (microcomedones), i.e. blackheads and such under the skin.  A facial or deep exfoliation can 'wake up' these microcomedones and cause the skin to purge after a facial.  I always warn acne-prone clients that this can happen, that its actually a good thing because we want them to come out.  A follow up facial within 4 weeks is important in this type of client.

A second reason someone could break out after a facial is improper extractions.  If you performed extractions and didn't get the entire 'seed' of the blackhead out, the leftovers can come out days after the facial.

And, lastly, she could be having a reaction or rash/bumps from the 'organic' facial or ingredients.  Many organic lines use a lot of oils or algae or seaweeds... all of which can cause break outs in the acne prone.

So, my question would be... what organic product line did you use? and did any of the reasons I mentioned above apply?

Hi Thanks for replying. this is awesome detailed information. I will definitely take these info seriously. your information makes a lot of sense. Thank you! the organic line was from Eminence. I'm actually trying on different brand, so far I am not liking this one. Have you heard of ILIKE? or any lines you can recommend?

Hi Cali

Eminence and ilike are pretty much the same.  The only difference is that Eminence has a lot more variety of products

Just because a product is organic doesn't mean it's safe. People are allergic to many different ingredients. Beware of people with food allergies because they tend to break out when using new products. Personally, I'm allergic to honeysuckle and I didn't know I was until I used an organic line that contained this ingredient.

Sometimes over manipulating skin during a facial can cause breakouts but there are many other reasons it can happen.

thanks Pearl ;-]

She's probably allergic to ONE ingredient. You can be allergic to papaya or pumping  or anything that is or not organic. You didn't do anything wrong, Just tell her that she's probably allergic to one ingredient and you had no way of knowing. Just do LED on her, she'll be fine.

Hi ok so Blue LED light should calm it?

Thanks Sara

lots of people are allergic to "natural" and organic lines.  Mostly because of Essential Oils.  What I see in my practice is it's either too much massage, microcomodones, or an allergy to an ingredient.

I just had an incident like this occur as well; I think b/c my client can be sensitive, she hadn't had a facial in over a year and who knows which ingredient might have been the culprit, if indeed it was a reaction to an ingredient.   So if your client does have a break out after the facial and you're not sure of the exact cause, what have you all found to be the best home-care advice?

Many people are sensitive to essential oils or just have sensitive skin all together.  Many people break out after a facial since they are detoxing.  Also, many organic products use plant extracts so it could be a particular plant/herb that she is reacting to.  Try using unscented products formulated for sensitive skin next time. If you provide extractions you can use high frequency to kill any bacteria in the pores.  I always use high frequency after extractions just to be safe.  It only takes a few minutes.

I use an organic line called Monarch Beauty, and have never had an issue with my clients having any sensitivities to the products. All though I tailor each facial dependent on their need and or sensitivity. A lot of companies claim organic but are only a small percentage. I try and read as much as I can on the ingredients, and sometimes even try on myself first (I'm very sensitive).
