Have you used any stress reducing techniques to stay sane at work?

I'm asking if you've used any stress reducing techniques to help you keep a smile on your face during a challenging situation at work.

I suppose it depends on what your source of stress is.  My recent stress reducing make-over included finding a business mentor and bookkeeper to help me refine the way I run my business, a new and more sophisticated skin care line that I felt very proud of, and meditating in the morning.  My sources of stress were:

1.  Feeling unfulfilled by the skin care industry's base tendency towards being un-sophisticated AKA I wasn't happy with the line I was using ALONG with their very cheesy corporate RA RA RA trainings (hence the new skin care line)

2.  I wasn't happy with my being over worked as a self employed person because I didn't know how to streamline my duties like a pro (hence the 35 yr experienced mentor and new bookkeeper) and

3.  My clients were absorbing ALL my nurturing healing energy, leaving none left for myself, (hence the adopted meditation practice).  I work alone and all my clients are very lovely so other people's bad attitudes are not the source of my stress.  The last time that was a source of my stress, I left.

Whatever the source of your stress is and/or if you're not in a position to uproot, then meditation is the single most powerful stress reducer in this world.  Other people and their drama can barely touch you as a devotee of meditation.  It downloads serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine into the bloodstream more efficiently than anything else.

Very good points! And I'm with you on the meditation. I used to practice regularly, then over the past two years let it slide. A month ago I restarted - every morning without fail, before I start the day now - and have noticed a huge difference in both my attitude and how smoothly the day goes.
Would you mind if I mention you, and the name of your business/spa in the article?

I would not mind at all and GOOD for you on bringing meditation back.  We all go through phases so it's great to keep each other inspired.

I forgot to include in my reply to you before that I've had to fire 3 clients in 16 years.  They were very disrespectful of my time with constant cancellations and rescheduling.  So if you're self-employed and it's not other staff members or an employer that is the source of your stress, you ARE allowed to fire your clients if they are causing you too much stress.  The best way to articulate that dreaded conversation is something LIKE this:

"I'm in this business because I truly love it and genuinely wish for the best result for each of my clients.  If I don't feel we're a good fit all the way around, then I won't be as likely to find the focus needed to get you your ideal result.  To best stay aligned with integrity with you and myself, I am going to recommend you find another skin care professional."   

Keep kind, firm and healthy boundaries to reduce stress.

Good for you for standing up for yourself and putting your own health and sanity first. I love how you've worded 'the firing'. It sets the boundary and you remain firm, yet still respectful and professional!
