Hi, I have a couple of questions regarding your home-based business.

  1. Do you guys have a sign or some sort of advertisement in front of your homes?
  2. How do you direct your clients to the actual "business area" of your residences?

Basically, I'm trying to determine a sophisticated way of directing clients to the back area of my home, where the spa/studio will be established.

Thanks so much!

Signage would depend on if your home is in a  commercial area or not. I am in a residential area so no obvious lawn or neon signs to upset the neighbors and town council. I do have a discreet 8x10 sign just outside my front door.

If you had a side entrance to your business just have a small sign with an arrow that says

Lugenia's  Skincare Studio --->-----> or a sign that is in the garden telling them they are in the right place...

Thanks Jennifer! Thanks for responding and for providing such great examples. Yes, I live and will practice in a residential area, and according to the City, businesses ran in residential communities aren’t allowed to exhibit large/neon signs, which I wouldn’t. :-) I’m thinking about using a sign (similar to what realtors use) with my business name and either an arrow or instructions to the entrance. It sounds boring, but I can’t think of anything else. Thanks again!

I have a business in my home and we are NOT allowed to have a business sign of any form. so what I did is had a nice round wood sign made That says WELCOME and then my house # and street name under it.  I put it on both sides of the sign so people from both directions could see it.  I put it in my yard at the end of my driveway and my customers are very greatful for it, especially new ones so they know they found the right house and the city has nothing to say because anyone should be able to have a sign like that in there yard.  hope that helps!

Hi Michelle Lee, thanks so much for sharing! Is your business located in the front, back, or side of your home? Originally, we wanted to use the front part of our home, but Texas wouldn't allow it. The inspector said that the entry MUST be separate, period, but we're making it work.

My clients come to my front door and through my living room directly attached to my practice room with a short hallway.  The inspector said I can do this as it is a short route if there is a fire and people need to escape quickly.  I have a very small sign with merely my name on it that hangs from my front gate. Because this is a neighborhood the city regulations say a small sign is ok. The walk way up to the front steps and door has scented lavender plants lining it. I flanked it with roses too. I must share though it is a pain to keep the living room tidy at all times.  On rainey cold days I have the gas fireplace burning and sometimes fresh flowers in a vase right near the front door.  I hang a sign on the front door that says "do not disturb" by the door bell so no one can disrupt my time with clients during their appointments.

A way to get around some regulations is to use your own name on the sign. My sign simply says "Sayra's"  so clients know they are at the right home.....and the city can't claim this is an ad for business, only identifys this is my home.

Smart! I might use that concept. :-) Thanks for sharing.

Hi Sayra, I know it's been awhile since this post (5/7/2013), but I have questions regarding your sign. What size and what type of sign do you display with your name only? Is it the size and type of a realtor's sign, and if so, do you have it posted in your front yard?

THANKS!
