I am in the process of getting my own room and maybe starting to spray tan.  The room I am looking at is pretty small but I think this service would be popular.  For those of you that do tanning how much room do you need?  Do you use a tent in your esti room?  I would like as much info as possible.

Hi ladies,

I'm in the same boat!  I recently moved about 45 miles north after getting married so I'm basically re-establishing my business from scratch, but I've done it before and I can do it again.  I'm an esthetician and I'm now adding spray tanning services to my menu--mobile and in studio.  I've finally found a new room to rent and the good news is, the room is an expansion and is being built out.  The problem is that I have NO idea how to go about doing this... can I spray tan in my facial room or will it pose too much of a mess/ventilation problem?  Also, should I go with a tent in the corner or build out an elaborate setup with curtain/wipe down walls/ etc?  I don't have much budget to work with so I may have to start out and add on later.  I know that spray tanning will be a success in my area, but I don't want my facial space/air to suffer if I do them in the same room.  Thoughts on this would be so very helpful!  Pictures/thoughts/ advice, etc.  PLEASE and thank you!

Honestly if you have room in a corner for a tanning tent that is what I use.  My room is about 300 sq ft so I have more room than most would...There is a place in the back of the tent usually that you can put a fan that will suck the fumes out of the room but if you are only doing one spray tan or so a day you shouldn't have a problem.  If you have your settings right on your spray gun, you won't have much overspray to make a mess but you can just wipe the tent down with an antibacterial wipe when the client is done.  I put a towel down for them to stand on.  Do you have a spray tanning company that you have in mind?  If not, please check out VIP premium blends.  I do not work for them or get anything from referrals, but they are awesome!  They are based out of St Petersburg, Fl...their customer service is outstanding, they are sooo helpful!!  Their color is absolutely beautiful, the most natural looking spray tan I have seen and I have had tons of people come and say they feared being orange and then they keep coming back because they love the color.  They have tons of different solution options as well.  My contact is Michael@vippremiumblends.com if you want more information or you can call and more than likely will talk to Thomas.  Their spray tans are all scented so you can choose from lemon grass, green clover lily, lovespell, etc...so that helps mask the smell too.  Good luck, keep me posted :).

Thanks, Sheila.  I appreciate that!  I just checked out their website.  I have purchased a formula that my Spray Tanning buddy has been using me for 2 years and I really like it but I've thought about trying Aviva just because they make an alcohol free formula and a 2 hour dry express formula?  That sounds awesome.  But then again, I really like the formula that I've used so far and my husband--aka my demo model--has had two fabulous sprays so far :)  I have my gun spraying very lightly so I don't think I will have an overspray problem.  I will definitely try and get some VIP samples though so thanks for the tip!  I suppose I can start out small and best case scenario, if I'm just overwhelmingly busy I can always opt for a larger space later.  You are probably right though.  I made the mistake of going to a sunless tanning forum last night for some advice and it was overwhelming!  I started to doubt my ability to do facials and sprays in the same space!  So thank you for helping me to get grounded again!  I appreciate it!  How many sprays versus facials are you doing a week, ladies?  Just wondering what I might expect!  I'm so blessed to be building the room from scratch but so READY to get started again in my new part of town!

Sheila, I tried VIP based on your recommendations & love it! Wow - so natural. I have a question for you, though. Which level of "light" are you using on your palest clients? Is it the # 5 (lightest) or # 8 (next one up)? I sprayed a really pale friend this weekend who doesn't tan naturally & she loved the color -- but said it faded in about 3 days. I don't know about her before/after care...but I am wondering if I should do two coats of #5? I only did 1 because she was very nervous about looking unnatural.

I'm in the NW so we have a LOT of extremely pale people. :-) They're paranoid about turning orange so I know I need a light formula. I'm curious if you've gotten similar feedback from your palest clients.

Another question for anyone who might know. Do any of you use the Mini by Tanning Essentials machine? I did a hands on class with a local company & that happened to be the machine included in my kit. I feel like it's a bit of a tempermental sprayer & would like to know what others are using. Or, if they've just changed out the gun & had good results.

kate thats so awesome!  I am glad that you love it!!

What is your email address?  I will send you this chart that Michael sent to me that breaks down the different forumlas for skin types.  I would spray a pale client with a 5 (but sometinmes they ask me for darker so I will go an 8).  I only do one coat and am not sure about 2 coats.  If you want to do 2 coats I would try on yourself first.  I like the 8 best for myself.  I am a Fitz 3 and although I am pale but more olive skin tone and 8 is my favorite.  I have sprayed with a 9 before and while it still looks good, it tends to be a bit orange on me.  I have tried their 5, 8, 10.5, organic (8), rapid (12.5) and a new formula out called Maxx tan or something which is a 9.  I thought at first the maxx was a bit dark but it's actually really nice!!  I am not sure about the fading.  I know for myself, I always fade in the hands and feet after about 4 or 5 days and then the arms where my bend is and usually after about 10 days the tan is mostly gone.  I don't ever use moisturizer, which I should, but I also won't use my loofah in the shower for about 5 days or so.  I would find out what her daily routine for the shower was, could be that she is using maybe a sponge or hand towel to soap up and that could cause the fading, or if she shaved.

As far as machine, I used the brown HVLP machine from VIP.  It works pretty well for me, sometimes the hose will come out if not in properly.  I do not spray a ton of clients but it works.  I don't have experience with your machine that you are talking about.  Keep me posted!!  So glad you like it.  I knew you would but it's always sczry when making recommendations.

Thanks Sheila! Sounds like you have the same skin type as me. I look pale, but do tan naturally. The 8 looked really good on me, too.

It definitely sounds like her pre/post maintenance impacted the tan. My tan (with 8) hasn't faded & it's been 5 days. But, I do use pre & post care products (Norvell), including the prep spray & after tanning I moisturize religiously.

I sprayed myself with the 8 on Friday, and even had a pedicure on Sunday with a salt scrub & hot paraffin dip. My tan still looks great! Wow - I've never seen a spray tan survive that treatment.

Have you seen Norvell's tan touch up pens? I really like these for touching up my tan lines. They're fairly cheap so it might be a good freebie for clients.

Thanks!!

oohh you can spray yourself???  that's talent!!  WOW!  I make my poor boyfriend do it and sometimes my hands and feet come out a little iffy.  LOL.

I haven't heard of those products but I will definitely look into them.  I do a lot of exfoliation and stuff before hand but after nothing.  I have the post care from VIP and I give out tiny samples of it, my friends love the stuff!!  Thanks for the tips.  The VIP sells the tan in a can, but I think it is a bit pricey so I sometimes will say if you need a hands and feet touch up they can come back in and I use that.

Oh one more thing, have any of you paid for a spray tanning instructional DVD or online course?  They can be pricey, and I think that my technique is pretty solid already, via trial and error and my good friend's generous advice.  I'm just the type that likes to master something so I tend to overthink sometimes!  Just wondering if it's worth it.
