Leaving Clients Alone During Treatment?

Hi everyone!  I wanted to get a general concensus on the protocols surrounding leaving clients alone during parts of a facial treatment.  I have been to 2 places that have put the mask on, covered my eyes and and said, OK, I'll be back in 20 minutes and left the room.  I felt bored and un-cared for as a client.  I personally would never do this. During mask, I perform hand and arm massage, scalp massage, or some type of relaxation treatment.  I just wondered what you all thought of this practice?  As a client, I must say I hated it.  Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Jodi! What an amazing discussion you opened up here.lol. When i read patricks reply I thought I needed to add something. YES it can be dangerous for your business as well to leave clients alone. I have to tell you guys although i was very fortunate in my case or it could of been a mess! I left my client alone just to change not even 5 minutes and usually i stand nearby and wait and then knock and ask if they are ready. Before I could even knock i heard a big THUD! I rushed into the room of course and there was my client with her pants off rubbing her hip and there was the facial bed tipped on its side! When I asked her what happened she said she was changing and fell I still dont know exactly what happned but my guess is she was holding on to the bed while changing which i told clients never to do. I was working for a chiropractor so they saw her and said she was ok sent her home with a ice pack. Then i saw her 2 times a week there getting FREE chiro treatment. She would always give me a dirty look. Eventually we all caught on to the fact she was taking advantage of the free treatment when really she didnt need it. I thought I was in trouble for sure! SO to get to the point lol yes having clients alone in the room is very risky. Now that im on my own I have to be triple careful!

Wow, Victoria, that's quite an experience!  I always leave them alone to change and get on the bed, that just seems standard practice.   We have chairs in the room for them to sit down on if need be to get changed.  I never even thought of that scenario though.

ya some people are looking for free stuff all the time. They did x rays on her and everything she was completely fine. lol.

I think if the majority of your clients you've asked said they want to be alone during the mask time then by all means give the client what they want. In my opinion, as a former customer, I didn't like paying top dollar to be left alone for 15 minutes. I remember one time just waiting and waiting for the esthetician to come back and I felt so frustrated that I was paying $75.00 for a 60 min. facial that really only ended up being a 45 min. facial. I prefer the human touch for my entire facial, especially at higher end spas that charge a lot of money. I always vowed when I became an esthetician I would not leave the client alone for more than a minute or two. I want them to feel like they are getting pampered the entire time, and a lot of my clients come in for pampering and the healing properties of human touch, and I want them to feel like they are getting their money's worth. I think it is a good idea to ask clients if they prefer to be left alone during the mask drying time, or if they would like a scalp massage/hand/ etc. I don't charge extra for this service, I believe my clients already pay top dollar, and they expect to have a high quality service that doesn't nickel and dime them for more money.
