What's the last continuing education class you took? How was it?

For the next issue of ASCP Skin Deep magazine, we'd like estheticians to tell us what was the most recent continuing education class you took. Would you recommend that class to others? What did you like about it?

We'll be using some of the answers in the Your Turn column. If you haven't taken any continuing education classes, or it was so long ago you can't remember, is there a reason for that--and what would you like to learn?

I took the 2-day "Advanced Face Massage" class at the International Dermal Institute in NYC and it was amazing! I left the class not only with an amazing new massage routine, but I also had the experience of receiving the massage from my partner in class, which really reminded me what it's like to be the client. I've had the chance to work it into my routine and my clients absolutely love it. Awesome massage routine, and awesome class! International Dermal Institute is always top-notch, and I absolutely recommend their classes!

Great info, thanks Kristina!

Anybody else who's taken a good class recently?

It has been awhile for me.  I've been an aesthetician for 15 years and loaded up on education for the first ten like nobody's business then began easing up within the past five focusing on retail and survival. I typically look forward to classes at the trade shows or a vendor class that's within a reasonable distance from my studio.  Trends in the industry were effecting my business in ways I felt unable to manage and found myself struggling against an endless current.  Online sales, internet marketing, clients choosing botox over facials, consumer handheld devices, nurses offering peels with injectables, aggressive MLM at networking events, celebrity endorsed skincare products, service specialty shops popping up at every strip mall ie. waxing studios, brow parlours and conflicting information confusing the consumer even more.  I want to adjust to the changes and use my strengths to stay in business but it has become increasingly challenging.  Industry experience and clinical knowledge doesn't seem as important anymore and when I try to help a client, I feel like they loathe  another sales pitch.  I'm not sure what I need.  It may seem like I need a better attitude (LOL) but I'm okay, really, just want to "get it" not "get out".  I am a massage therapist and certified yoga instructor because I love learning and love helping people and feel secure knowing I have other skills to fall back on or add when needed.

I enjoy classes that review physiology of the skin, peel depths and expectations and stress what we can do that the derms, nurses, mlm's, DIY systems can't match.  I know "touch" is a big factor and there are others.  Maybe what I'm looking for is R-E-S-P-E-C-T... LOL!  Which I do have for myself and fellow estheticians however, whatever SKIN INC. can do to help us improve our image and profession to the public, bring it on!
